Dance to You! at Siena House

In early November 2023, Dance to You! brought dance to Siena House! Siena House is a transitional housing shelter for homeless single women who are pregnant or have children under the age of three, located in the Bronx, New York City. Since its opening in 1990, Siena House has been providing a safe environment for women and their young children to live in while giving them support and guidance.

Our dancers performed solos of a variety of different dance genres, from ballet to contemporary and modern, and even K-pop/hip-hop! We wanted the women to feel encouraged and supported as they watched us dance, so we specifically chose a few special pieces for our performance. First, our founder Caitlin Liau performed a K-pop/hip-hop solo to the song, “How You Like That” by BLACKPINK, and as a finale, we performed a group jazz number to the song, “Dance the Night Away” by Dua Lipa from the movie Barbie. BLACKPINK is a prominent K-pop girl group well known all around the world for their “girl crush” concept, presenting the power of women through their fierce and empowering songs. In addition, Barbie, released earlier this year and based on the beloved Mattel Barbie and Ken dolls, has powerful messages of women empowerment.

Finally, we also created a presentation about the many physical, mental, and social benefits of dance to share with the women all that dance has to offer for their children and their development as well as themselves!

It was so special to be able to perform for these women as well as their young children who watched us dance so attentively! We even discovered a potential future dancer, who was clapping her little hands and bopping to the music!
